Live Beyond The Rat Race

“A Rat Race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit. It conjures up the image of the futile efforts of a lab rat trying to escape while running around a maze or in a wheel” – WIKIPEDIA
Have we honestly asked ourselves if this defines our current daily endeavours? Many at times we get entangled in not bothering to do a critical assessment of where we are coming from, where we are and where we are going. Defining our short, medium and long term goals helps us to extensively appraise if we are progressing or retrogressing in respect of any benchmark we have set.
Being entangled in a web that falls short of our dreams can be likened to my knowledge of Physics which defines “Inertia” as the reluctance of a body at rest to move or a moving body to stop. This typically addresses the rat race situation many are confronted with today. It is either we are so relaxed in our comfort zone and choose not to move or we keep moving in a direction that never leads us to our dreams but never wanting to stop even when we realize the futility of our advancement.
Agreed there is a time for acquisition of skills, knowledge, training and experience, coupled with the development of the right attitude to prepare us for the future. Conventionally, many resort to corporate or public employment as a “special purpose vehicle” to build us for our destination. Unfortunately, many get to the destination and refuse to disembark to pursue the purpose of commencing the journey in the first place. While for others, it may due to circumstances of unemployment, tapping quickly into the creative abilities endowed with early enough or just blessed with some natural skills that meets human needs enables them to by-pass the conventional route.
Irrespective of our diverse circumstances, the entrepreneurship spirit is the key that holds the ace. There are no defined rules to this. As long we live in that consciousness, sooner or later, the tide will turn. The drive to live beyond the rat race should be ever present, in or out of employment irrespective. You will design the strategy that works best for your circumstances without breaching any ethics. There are so many flexible opportunities out there and we just have to dig out what suits our circumstances best. It may not be Mega for starters and it may be, but what is crucial is that the entrepreneurship attitude is ever present. While l recognize the fact that our risk appetite differs and very subjective, it is very manageable in every scenario. Just define what is right for you.
I have come to realize that in our contemporary times, fame commands so much wealth. Wherever you are on the face of the earth, as long as you very good at what you do and you are able to bring this to the fore to be visibly seen, the world will seek for you.
I leave you with just three of numerous keys available:
• Identify your natural gifting that indeed meets human needs
• Polish those gifts to the extent that it commands a demand
• Monetize your polished gifts and build a brand in the process
Leave a comment below on how you are dealing with your rat race, or how you dealt with your rat race, or how you even avoided the rat race altogether.
I look forward to you inviting me to speak at your next Conference/Event/Workshop. Be it Corporate, Public, Community, School or Faith Audiences.

Have you moved from Management Leadership to Leadership Management

Management Leadership is when you lead with an attitude of a Manager while Leadership Management is when you manage with an attitude of a Leader. Many schools of thought have tried to create a clear line of distinction between a Leader and a Manager. However in reality, there is a synergy between both but what defines the evolving approach that leads to optimum results in the 21st Century is your ability to slightly tilt the pendulum in either direction without losing cognisance of the other end of the pendulum.
In my personal experience, circumstances within the context of which direction is required will determine how the matrix of Leadership and Management is explored. What helps to achieve the goals and objectives expected will vary depending on what motivates or aligns followership to an expected destination. The practicality of my understanding will be very relevant to Corporate Governance as totally distinct from Public Governance. Reason being the former is guided by corporate ethics while the latter is a followership of extensively liberal masses with diverse characteristics across the globe.
Dependence on authority, inspiring fear, driving employees etc., have conventionally been placed on one side of the divide as the approach to Management Leadership while generating enthusiasm, coaching employees, developing people etc., have conventionally been placed on the other side of the divide as the approach to Leadership Management. Invariably, the result each side of the divide is propagating is that Management Leadership approach will make followership do things because they have to do it while Leadership Management approach will make followership do things because they like to do it.
There are several lines of distinction to zero in on this analogy but Leadership Management will always sits right with me because it is a vehicle of influence that achieves results without losing grip of deliverables within set timelines.
Have you moved from Management Leadership to Leadership Management? I would like to know your thoughts.
